Windows 10 reached its official end of support on 14 October 2025. Since then, home users have been able to keep getting security fixes through Microsoft's consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme, which was due to end on 13 October 2026. That date has now moved: Microsoft's ESU page says the programme runs until 12 October 2027.
What changed
The extension was not a big launch. It appeared in Microsoft's Windows 10 ESU documentation and in an editor's note dated 25 June 2026 on a Windows Experience Blog post, and was reported by Help Net Security the next day. According to that report, PCs already enrolled carry on automatically to the new date — there is nothing to do.
How home users can get it
Microsoft lists three ways to enrol a PC:
- Free, if you sync your PC settings with Windows Backup.
- 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
- A one-time purchase of USD 30 (or the local equivalent, plus tax).
One ESU licence covers up to 10 devices on the same Microsoft account. The PC needs Windows 10 version 22H2 with the latest updates, and an administrator Microsoft account (not a child account). Work PCs joined to a company domain or managed by an organisation use a separate business programme. Microsoft notes that options and timing can differ by region, for example in the European Economic Area.
What it means
- For people on older PCs that cannot run Windows 11, it buys another year of security fixes — though ESU covers security updates only, not new features.
- For developers who ship Windows apps, it is a reason to keep testing on Windows 10 for a while longer: a share of your users will stay on it until at least late 2027.
- It is still a countdown. Microsoft continues to recommend moving to Windows 11 where the hardware allows, and enrolling in ESU does not stop you from upgrading later.
