Design your own homepage: a tour of the visual homepage editor

← All articles Email RSS Atom

Your JM Tech Power account comes with a personal homepage on its own address: <your-handle>.jmtechpower.com. The old address, https://jmtechpower.com/<your-handle>, now forwards there. Here is how to make the page your own with the visual editor.

Open the editor

  • Sign in, open the Workspace menu at the top and choose My homepage.
  • Or visit your homepage while signed in and press Edit homepage under your name. Only you see that button.

The editor has three parts: Add a block on the left, your page in the middle, and Properties on the right. On a phone they stack on top of each other.

Add blocks

A homepage is a column of blocks. There are five kinds:

  • Text: a few paragraphs about you. Basic formatting works: headings, bold, italics, lists and links.
  • Links: a list of your other sites, each with a label and an address starting with https://.
  • Image: a picture (see below).
  • Project card: one of your projects, shown as a card that links to it.
  • Article card: a published article you want to point people to.

Drag a block from the left onto the page, dropping it where you want it. Or simply press the block's button: it is added straight after the block you have selected. That is the easy way on a touch screen.

Arrange and edit

  • Drag a block up or down to move it, or use its ↑ and ↓ buttons. ✕ removes it.
  • Click a block to select it; its settings appear under Properties, and the page updates as you type.
  • From the keyboard: select a block, then Alt+↑ or Alt+↓ moves it, Delete removes it, and Esc goes back to the page style.

The page in the middle is drawn by the same code as your real homepage, so what you see there is exactly what visitors will see.

Add your own pictures

Select an Image block and choose Upload an image. PNG, JPEG, GIF and WebP pictures up to 5 MB work. Every upload is checked and re-saved on our server, and the hidden location data that phone photos often carry is removed before anything is published. Write a short description too: it is read out to people who use a screen reader. You can keep up to 40 pictures, and they count toward your storage.

Change the look

With no block selected, Properties shows Page style (custom CSS). If you know a little CSS you can change colours and spacing. It only ever affects your homepage, never the rest of the site, and anything unsafe is removed automatically.

Save

Press Save at the top when you are happy. If something cannot be published, for example a link that is not a web address, the block is marked in red and the reason is shown; nothing is saved until it is fixed. If you try to leave with unsaved changes, the browser asks you first.

Good to know

  • A homepage holds up to 30 blocks, and a Links block up to 20 links.
  • Private projects on your page are shown only to you, never to visitors.
  • Without JavaScript, a Simple editor on the same page still lets you edit text and link blocks.
