TypeScript 7.1 beta: plugins for Vue and Svelte files, a new API, and what to check before upgrading

News · written 7 November 2026. A summary for readers, not technical advice — check the source at the end for the details.

TypeScript is the open-source language from Microsoft that adds types to JavaScript; a huge share of web apps, desktop apps and command-line tools are written in it. On 8 July 2026 the team shipped TypeScript 7.0, the version whose compiler was rebuilt for speed — the team says it was "often" around 10x faster than TypeScript 6. Now the first feature update on top of it is in beta.

When

The team announced the TypeScript 7.1 beta on 20 October 2026. Their plan, in their words: "a Release Candidate in about a month from now, followed by a final release shortly thereafter". No exact date is given, so treat any date you see elsewhere as a guess.

To try the beta in a project:

npm install -D typescript@beta

What is new

  • Content mappers: a new plugin point, set up with a contentMappers list in tsconfig.json, lets tools for file types such as Vue, Svelte, Astro and MDX plug into TypeScript's type checking and editor features. Running them needs tsc --runExternalCode. The post shows these as prototypes — not every framework's mapper is published yet.
  • A new API, split into entry points such as typescript/sync, typescript/async and typescript/ast, for tools built on top of the compiler.
  • es2026 is now a stable --target and --lib option, bringing types for newer JavaScript features such as Math.sumPrecise(), Iterator.concat() and Array.fromAsync().
  • Import attributes in module declarations: you can now describe imports like CSS or text files with declare module "*" with { type: "css" }.
  • Source phase imports (import source), a newer JavaScript proposal, are now understood.
  • More speed and memory work: one of the team's benchmarks went from 22.2 to 11.9 seconds.

Check before you upgrade

The post lists two changes that may break existing code:

  • Updated DOM type definitions (lib.d.ts) may produce new type errors in browser code.
  • TypeScript is now stricter about certain generic ("distributive") type checks, so some code "may need to be modified".

A beta is for testing: try it on a branch, not in a release you ship to users.

Why it matters to small publishers

If you build your app with TypeScript, the 7.x line means faster builds and quicker editor feedback. And if your project uses Vue, Svelte or Astro, content mappers point towards one TypeScript checking all of your files — worth watching as the tools catch up.
