Got a project but no download yet? Use Publish your first release

← All articles Email RSS Atom

Maybe you created a project to claim its name, or you skipped the installer while filling in the form. Either way, the project exists but there is nothing to download yet, so visitors see No releases yet. This guide shows how to get your first version out from there.

Where to find the button

Open your project's page while signed in. Because you are the owner and there are no releases, you will see a Publish your first release button in two places:

  • in the Install box on the right, where the download button will appear later;
  • on the Releases tab, under No releases yet.

Only you see it. Visitors keep seeing the plain message, and the button goes away by itself once your first release is published.

Fill in the release form

The button opens the release form. Only one thing is required: something to download. Give it one of these:

  • Main installer: the file people get from the Download button, and the one jm proj install runs;
  • …or external download URL, if the file is hosted somewhere else;
  • Additional files, for example one build per platform. A release made only of these counts too.

Everything else is optional:

  • Version / tag: leave it empty and it is read from the file name, so myapp-1.3.0.exe becomes 1.3.0. If the name has no version in it, your first release is 1.0.0.
  • Release notes (summary) and a list of changes, one per line.
  • Project details, such as category and supported systems. These update the project itself and are pre-filled, so change only what is new.

Press Publish release. You are taken back to the project page with a message that the release was published.

What changes after publishing

  • If you gave a main installer or a download URL, the Install box now has a Download latest button.
  • The Releases tab lists your release, marked Latest, with its files.
  • People can install it with jm proj install. Each extra file is matched to a kind of computer by its name; if a guess is wrong, correct it next to the file on the Releases tab.

Next time, use Draft a new release in the sidebar; the version continues on from your last one if you leave it empty.

Starting a brand-new project instead? You can attach the installer right on the create form: see Publish your software in one step. Your projects are all on My projects.
