What happens to homepage pictures you no longer use

In the homepage editor (My homepage in the Workspace menu) you can add your own pictures with Upload an image. Each one counts toward your storage, and you can keep up to 40. Pictures you uploaded and then stopped using used to stay there forever. Now they are tidied up for you.

The short version

  • A picture that is on your homepage is never deleted.
  • A picture you have taken off your homepage is deleted once it has gone unused for 24 hours.
  • Put it back on your page and press Save before then, and the 24 hours start over the next time it goes unused.

What counts as "used"

A picture is in use when a saved homepage shows it — in an Image block, or in your page style (custom CSS). It also counts if someone else's homepage uses it. Two things to know:

  • Only what you have saved counts. A picture you uploaded but never saved onto your page is unused.
  • Only homepages count. If you copied a picture's web address into an article, a chat message or a project description, that does not keep it. Keep it on your homepage, or upload a copy where you need it.

How the 24 hours are counted

A check runs every hour. The first time it finds a picture unused, it only notes the time — it never deletes a picture just because it was uploaded long ago. A later check deletes the picture once that note is at least 24 hours old. Because the check runs hourly, that is usually a little over a day — about 24 to 26 hours — after you take a picture off your page.

Right before deleting, the check looks at your homepage once more, so saving the picture back onto your page at the last minute keeps it. In the very rare case that a picture disappears at the exact moment you save, just upload it again.

What is never touched

The cleanup only looks at pictures uploaded in the homepage editor. Your project files and releases, JM Drive files, chat attachments and profile picture are not part of it.

Before you remove a picture

A deleted picture cannot be brought back, so keep your own copy of any picture you care about. The upside: the space it used goes back to your storage, and it no longer counts toward your 40 pictures.
